Class of 2006
2006 Quern Fellowship
Congratulations to our 2006 Quern Fellowship recipient, Kate Perushek. Kate Perushek is a dual degree student at the Harris School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration. She is also participating in the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy. Her principal area of interest is social policy with an emphasis on programs and policies intended to benefit low-income families. Ms. Perushek is committed to improving the lives of youth and families, as evidenced by her direct work tutoring Latino students at the Gads Hill Community Center and her policy work at past internships for the Office of the Advisor to the Governor on Social Wellbeing in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the Department of Health and Human Services in the City of Evanston. As the 2005-2006 Quern Fellow, Ms. Perushek is currently working on researching effective Latino teen pregnancy prevention programs. She is a native of Duluth, Minnesota.
The Quern Fellowship is supporting Kate Perushek’s work researching effective Latino teen pregnancy prevention programs due to the high rates of teen pregnancy among young Latinas nationwide. The project seeks to enhance and supplement the work being done by the Teenage Pregnancy Prevention Committee of the Latino Coalition for Prevention. The aim of the project is to summarize current research on Latino teen pregnancy prevention, describe interventions currently in place in Chicago, assess effective Latino teen pregnancy prevention programs in other urban areas, and conclude with programming recommendations for the City of Chicago based on this research. The goals of the project will be to promote effective pregnancy prevention programs that can be implemented in school and community-based settings to help Latino teens make informed and healthy choices regarding sexual activity and ultimately reduce Latina teen pregnancy rates.
We look forward to Kate's Quern presentation during the Winter Quarter. Congratulations Kate! For a copy of Kate's presentation click HERE
