Announcing new Fellows and Awards

2009 Quern Fellows:

Alejandra Ros (SSA 2010)

Alejandra will examine the role of child care centers in childhood obesity prevention efforts in the City of Chicago. By identifying various types of child care centers' current efforts to promote healthy eating and physical activity, Alejandra hopes to better understand which methods are most effective for engaging child care centers in obesity prevention and to provide recommendations for enhancing childhood obesity prevention efforts in Chicago.

Greg Van Hyfte (SSA 2010)

Greg's Quern project will examine ethnic disparities in how complementary and alternative medicine modalities can help support caregivers who are taking care of a loved one in hospice care.  A needs assessment of caregivers in the Chicagoland area will be conducted, and recommendations will be made to help improve caregivers' access to these therapies.

Alix Midgley (SSA 2010)
While access to abortion procedures has become more widespread in recent years, the need to improve ancillary care such as counseling and reproductive health education for women who have an abortion has been often neglected. With the support of the Arthur Quern Fellowship and guidance from the Chicago Women's Health Clinic, Alix will be examining the current research pertaining to possible psychosocial effects of abortion, as well as the procedural information and services provided to women who have an abortion in Chicago-area clinics. Her research will culminate in the formulation of recommendations for further inquiry as well as improvement and implementation of additional ancillary services.

2009 Erikson Interns:

Sihler Branch (SSA 2010)

Sihler will be working with the UCMC’s Department of Surgery to update the Patient Handbook with specific sections related to preparing the patient for surgery, amenities available around UCMC, patient-specific education brochures, making the healthcare process understandable to the patient and family. She will also be merging various BSD and UCMC data sources into cohesive institution-inclusive reports for faculty, and processing the flow redesign in Central Sterile Processing using service-specific quality indicators.

Lindsay Allen (SSA 2010)

Lindsay will be collaborating with the UCMC’s Department of Radiation/Oncology to develop a centralized scheduling model for radiology services, and to link an organizational strategy with a capital planning model for imaging services. Lindsay will also be working to refine operational dashboard metrics for radiology services and to develop growth strategies and a strategic plan for the cancer program. Some of her work will also include satellite facility development for the radiation oncology program.

Elizabeth Belser (Harris 2010)

Elizabeth will be working with the Managed Care division at the UCMC. One of Elizabeth’s projects will be helping to execute an external relationship building effort around a particular program. She will also be organizing and supporting MDs and clinical staff in their efforts to strengthen relationships with external groups that affect where patients seek medical care. This includes market research, identifying operational challenges, and facilitating an appropriate marketing support.

Schweitzer Fellows:

Congratulations to GPHAP students Erica Koegler and Greg Van Hyfte who have been awarded the Schweitzer Fellowship. Erica will work with the Westside Healthy Start Program to introduce exercise, relaxation and nutritional approaches to health for pre and post natal mothers as a means of reducing infant mortality and low birth weight. Greg will be coordinating the Chicagoland yoga community in order to conduct ongoing yoga and relaxation services for underserved populations, such as the hospice clients, caregivers, and staff of Horizon Hospice.

GPHAP is happy to announce that students Mia Laflin, Anne Wong and Rong Xu will be the new Booth Healthcare Club Co-Chairs.  The Healthcare Group is a GSB student organization, which helps students learn more about the health services industry and explore possible career opportunities in the health care sector. Kellogg Biotech & Healthcare Case Competition:

Congratulations to current students Eric Fahs, Patricia Gee, and former GPHAP student Charu Daiya who participated as one of two teams representing the Booth School of Business at the Kellogg Biotech & Healthcare Case Competition and placed second in the overall competition. There were 10 teams competing from 8 different graduate schools, including the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, the Johnson School at Cornell, Northwestern, and the London Business School.
